Lightning Outlasts Valley Christian-Bakersfield 28-26!

The Offensive Line dominated the game! The Lightning showed they have a lot of heart Friday night when they fought back to overcome a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win the game. Valley Christian/Bakersfield had a great game plan and had the Lightning defense frustrated for the first 3 quarters. No team had ran on the Lightning Defense all year the way VC/B was doing. Then, all of a sudden on a 3rd down play, Tom Robinson broke through and sacked the VC/B quarterback for his 12th sack of the year and you could feel a momentum switch. The defense became a dominating machine... stopping VC/B twice in the red zone. That got Nathan Rynning and the Offense fired up and the Lightning were starting their march to victory. The Lightning looked unstoppable in the fourth quarter. All the conditioning they had done all year was paying off. VC/B players were tiring out and the Lightning were hitting over-drive. VC/B never scored again and the Lightning won its 11th straight game of the season and will move on to the 8-man Large Team semi-finals.

It was good to see our injured players of the last few weeks back on the field. They all contributed. But it was team defense that shut VC/B down. Justin Peterson (#77), Jesse Mock (#55) and Robert Masaniai (#70) shut down the inside run game and Jacob Holz (#63), Tom Robinson (#37), Bryan Bates (#75) and Steve Wilcox (#32) shut down the outside sweeps in the fourth quarter forcing VC/B to pass. That's exactly what Coach Roberts wanted to see. Nathan Rynning (#12) and Chris Bridenstine (#83) have 12 interceptions this year between them and are probably the two best pass defenders in 8-man football. VC/B got nothing through the air and the game was ours.

Here's how the scoring went. Valley Christian/ Bakersfield scored first making it 6-0 when the 2-pt conversion failed. Then the Lightning Offense came right back when Johnathan "Jake" Henley (#28) got lose on a 35-yd run to pay dirt. It was 7-6 with the extra point. Then VC/B scored 14 unanswered points to make the score 20-7. Then the next score did not come until right before half-time when Peterson plunged into the end zone from 1-yd out making the scored 20-14 at the half.

The second half started out with VC/B scoring on a 65-yd drive making the score 26-14. It was starting to look bad for the Lightning hopefuls especially when VC/B got the ball and drove down into the red zone and was threating again to score. Then a hard hit jarred the ball loose into the End zone and the Lightning players fell on it making a touchback and stopping the drive.

Then came the fourth quarter. Rynning started out by hitting Peterson for a 13-yd TD pass. That made it 26-21 with the extra point. Then VC/B started to come back and the huge sack by Robinson stopped that possession and the Lightning had the ball again. So, Rynning went to work and ended the scoring drive with a 35-yd pass to Bridenstine making the score 28-26. There were still 3 minutes left in the game and VC/B was not just going to give up. Their big mistake was they went to the passing game instead of sticking to the run which was working for them all game. The Lightning defense shut down their passing in 4 plays and the game was over. But man...what a game it was. Both teams played very well and gave their thanks in prayer as all 50 players from both teams held their helmets high to give honor to Jesus Christ for their faith and a game free of injuries.

The Lightning will be on the road for their semi-final game to Avalon on Catalina Island. This will be a very tough game so we need everyone who can to come to the game and support your team. The game will be at 1:00 Saturday. For information and directions to the game click here or call the school office at 760-365-3599.
