Lightning Football News...Lightning Beats Calvary Chapel Redlands 46-0!
Lighnting football opened their 2002 season in the same fashion as the 2001 season with a dominating defense holding the Calvary Chapel Redlands Bears to 0 points and only two first downs (one of them was on a penality) in the game. The Bears did not field a team in 2001 and this year's team was full of new players with no experience. Their lack of experience showed as the Lightning Defense created 3 fumbles and an interception as well as holding the Bear offense to -2 yds rushing. The Lightning Offense scored on just about every possession showing that this year's team will be passing and running the ball. The Bears trouble began when they fumbled on the 2nd play of the game on their 23 yd line. Four plays later Quarterback Nathan Rynning hit tight end Justin Peterson for a 3-yd TD play. The Lightning's 2nd possession ended up about the same way as Rynning kept the ball this time for a 3-yd TD run, making the score 13 -0. A bad snap on the point after kept the score at 13-0. Then things only got worse for the Bears as their 3rd punt of the game was returned 45-yds by Justin Peterson for the Lightning's third TD making the score 20-0 with the extra point. The 2nd quarter wasn't any brighter for the Bears as Jordan Leichtner picked off the Bear quarterback on their 11-yd line. On 1st and 10 the Lightning decided to take a 17-yd field goal try and it was good, making the scored 23-0. The next possession, the Offense marched down the field in 5 plays to the Bear 1-yd line. On 1st and 10, again the Lightning elected to kick an 11-yd field goal (I guess Rynning needed the practice?) and it was good, making the score 26-0. The Bears next possession was their best one of the day. They picked up two 1st downs only to fumble the ball on the Lightning 30-yd line. On the very next play Johnathon (Jake) Henley got lose for a 36-yd TD run and the scored was 33-0 with the extra point. The Lightning starting sending in the 2nd-team players and the Bears were able to move a little better but the time ran out in the first half and the score was still 33-0. On the 2nd possession of the Third Quarter the Bears tried a fake Punt which cost them an 18-yd loss and the ball. The next play Jesse Mock got lose for a 7-yd TD scamper and the Score was 40-0 with the extra point. The game was ended when the Bears fumbled on their 17-yd line and Steven Wilcox picked it up and scored the last touchdown making the score 46-0. The game was ended because of the 45 point Mercy Rule that exists in 8-man football. Rynning ended the day with 6 of 9 for 67 yards and 1 TD passing. Jake Henley was high rusher with 56 yds on 3 carries. Justin Peterson was top receiver with 49-yards on 3 catches and 1 TD as well as his 45-Yard TD punt return. Second Team Quarterback Steven Wilcox looked very good at his debut at that position with 1 pass for 13 yards and 15 yards rushing. The second team Offense played most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The Lightning are at home this week as Calvary Christian (Vista) comes to visit Lightning field this Saturday night at 7:00PM. Bring the family out and support your Lightning Football team.
