Lightning Football News...The Bigger They Are.....Excelsior Falls 55-8!
The much bigger Excelsior Edu. Center (over 800 students) came to Lightning stadium saturday night with one thing in mind...to beat the Lightning in their own stadium. Someone forgot to tell them that the Lightning have not lost at home since the 1900's. It was a cold and windy night, but the die-hard Lighting fans showed up and cheered their team to another victory. The estimated 500+ fans packed into Lightning Stadium and they made themselves known. All week long we had heard how much bigger Excelsior's school was and that it was going to be a battle. Although the conditions were not looking good, the Lightning did not plan on losing. They were pumped up and ready to put a hurting on Excelsior. The Lighting won the toss and got started on the first drive. By the end of the first quarter the Lightning had struck 4 times and it was 28-0. The first strike came when Nathan Rynning (#12) hit Justin Peterson (#77) on a 1-yd Pass in the end zone. The extra point was missed and it was 6-0. Jesse Mock (#55) then broke through the line on a 1-yd plunge making it 12-0. A 2-pt play then made it 14-0. The third strike came when Nathan Rynning hit Chris Bridenstine (#83) on a beautiful 33-yd pass to pay dirt. It was then 21-0 with the extra point. The first quarter finished with Rynning hitting Jacob Holz (#63) on a 4-yd pass play to the end zone bringing the score to 28-0. The second quarter started with the Eagles putting together the only good drive of the night for their offense, ending in a TD and 2-pt conversion. The Lightning defense was not happy being scored on for the first time this season so...they decided to get in on the scoring action and forced a fumble deep in Eagle territory that rolled into the End Zone and Robert "Tiny" Masaniai (#70) recovered it for a TD. The score was then 35-8 with the extra point. The Lightning would strike once more in the third quarter when Rynning hit Peterson again on a 13-yd Pass Play. At the half it was 42-8. In the Third quarter Coach Roberts wanted to take a look at some 2nd team and JV players on offense so there were heavy substitutions. The subs played well but no scoring resulted in the third quarter for either team. The fourth quarter remained scoreless until Peterson scored twice, first on a 1-yd run making the score 49-8 and then on a 3-yd run ending the game at 55-8 with just about 3 minutes left in the game. So, for the 3rd time in three weeks the game was stopped in the fourth quarter because of the 8-Man, 45-pt. Mercy Rule. The fans were kind of glad to see it end early this night as the tempature had dropped into the 40's with the wind chill. Nathan Rynning finished with 12 of 23 for 115 yds, and 4 TD's. Nathan also ran for 11 yrds on 3 carries. Top rusher was Jesse Mock with 129 yds on 14 rushes and 1 TD. Justin Peterson had 67 yds on 14 rushes and Steven Wilcox (#32) had 46 yds on 11 rushes. Total rushing for the night was 258 yds on 49 attempts for an average of 5.3 yds per carry. Top receivers were Justin Peterson with 7 catches for 62 yds and 2 TD's. Chris Bridenstine also had 2 catches for 29 yds and Jacob Holz had 23 yds on 2 catches. The Lightning will again be at home this week as Lone Pine comes to Lightning stadium for the first time ever to meet the Mighty Lightning on their home turf.
