Lightning Football News...Lightning Still No.1!... Patriots Fall 26-7!
It was the biggest game of the year for both the Hesperia Christian Patriots and the Joshua Springs Lightning as both teams were undefeated coming into the game and looking to stay that way. The Lightning were ranked No.1 in the State averaging 52 points per game on offense and only allowing 1.6 points per game on Defense. Hesperia Christian were ranked No.2 in the state averaging 49 points per game of offense and allowing only 5.4 points per game on defense. It was the match of the year in the Agape League and in most opinions, the game of the year in the 8-man Large school Division. The Lightning in the opinion of many were the underdogs by at least 10 points. I guess someone forgot to tell the Lightning they were supposed to lose the game. The game started out as a defensive battle as these two giants of the gridiron were testing each others strengths and weaknesses. The Lightning drew first blood as they struck for a field goal in the second quarter. The score was only 3-0 at the end of the first half. This was the lowest scoring for either team this year in the first half. The fight was on! The coaches made their adjustments and the third quarter was a different story as both teams started to move the ball better. The Lightning struck again with another field goal and it was 6-0. Then the Patriots because of penalities against the Lightning were able to sustain a drive and score a TD. The extra point was good and it was 7-6 Patriots. This was the first time this year the Lightning had been behind in any game and it did not feel good! Coach Roberts looked like a caged lion as he paced the sidelines letting his team know it was time to step it up a notch. The end of the third quarter found the score 7-6 Patriots. The fourth quarter was a different story as Coach Roberts unleashed his secret weapon....Justin Peterson! The Lightning offensive line started opening up holes for Peterson as he was getting 8-12 yds per carry then the passing game opened up and the Patriots were wearing down. The Lightning scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to secure the No.1 spot in the polls and to stay undefeated. It was a great game and one that both teams can be proud of. We will be adding more info as we receive the individual stats on the game. The JV squad also won their game 20-6 and remain undefeated as well. More on the JV game later too!
