Lightning Football News...Lightning Defeats Pilgrim Christian 56-14!
It was the first round of the 2002 8-Man Large Team Division playoffs and the excitment was in the air. The air was very cool...around the 45 degree mark but no one seemed to care, afterall it is playoff time. The visiting team was Pilgrim Christian from the LA area. The Lightning were the No.1 seed and they were the 16th seed but they sure didn't play like it. They were probably the fastest team rushing we have played so far this year. The Lightning defense held up though and only allowed 14 points. The Lightning lost 2 players to injuries Justin Peterson (#77) and Jordan Leichter (#43), with Jesse Mock (#55) on the sidelines too that adds up to over 200 tackles this year between the three of them. So, the Lightning did very well to only allow 14 points. Jacob Holz (#63) stepped up his game as well as Tom Robinson (#37) and Bryan Bates (#75) on defense to replace the Injured players. The Offense relied on the arm of Nathan Rynning (#12) as they passed for the first 3 touchdowns. The first came on an 11-yd pass to Leichtner and with the extra point it was 7-0. Then Rynning hit Chris Bridenstine (#83) for a 10-yd catch in the end zone and it was 14-0. Then Daniel Aquaye of Pilgrim Christian surprised the Lighting special teams with his speed as he ran back the kick-off for a TD. The score was then 14-6. Then Rynning hit Leichtner one more time on a 12-yd pass to pay dirt and it was 21-6 with the extra point. Then the Lightning defense caused a fumble and Steven Wilcox (#32) ran it back for a TD and it was 28-6. That ended the first quarter. The second quarter scoring started when Wilcox busted through on a 3-yd run for a TD. That made it 35-6. Pilgrim was't about to give up and they started marching on the Lighting with the aide of a couple of penalities. That possession ended though when Rynning Intercepted a pass. Then Pilgrim's defense stiffened and held the Lighting to just 4 downs and took over on Offense. A few plays later Pilgrim's Gregg Barker-Evans got loose on a 30-rd run from scrimmage and scored bringing the score to 35-14 with a 2-pt try that was successful. Then Johnathan "Jake" Henley (#28) got the first of his two scores on a 2-yd plunge into the end zone. The score was 42-14 with the extra point. That ended a very exciting first half of play. The Henley scored the only points of the third quarter on a 1-yd keeper and it was 49-14 with the extra point. The last score came when Rynning hit Holz on a 23-yd pass play with 11:51 to play in the fourth quarter. That was the final score of 56-14 with the extra point. The defense also had strong play from Robert Masaniai (#70) and Jerry Thorn (#45). The Lighting will be on the road for round 2 traveling to Valley Christian- Bakersfield. This will be a tough game so we need everyone who can to come to the game and support your team. The game will be at 7:30 Friday night. The caravan will leave the School parking lot around 12:00 Noon. For directions to the game click on the schedule page.
