Final Game for Lightning Football!

Story by Ray Boetger

For the Lightning, this would be the hardest game in CIF. They have been the underdog the whole year. They started this season in the #2 spot. After beating the number three team, and the number 5 team, they mysteriously dropped to number 6. They also had to deal with the tough loss of Nathan Rynning. Nathan was all CIF 2 years in a row for multiple positions. The Lightning knew it was a hard loss, but they play team football, not 1 man.

The game started out the same way it ended. Lightning knew that to win this game, they would have to stop the giant on Cal Lu, #39. He was 6'6, 260. This is no lie. He was a giant. Lightning did a good job stopping him in the third quarter, but before that both teams went back and forth scoring on each other. Both the fans and the players never lost hope, even when it looked hopeless..

It all started with the kickoff. All of the Lightning fans stood as a drum role from the Joshua Springs Lightning Drum Corps opened up the kick off. Cal Lu got the ball, but was stopped quickly. Lightning defense hit the field and was ready to play. The C-Hawks were going no where, so they resorted to throwing the ball long to #39. Chris Bridenstine had great coverage, but there is only so much he could do to defend this C-Hawk giant. Cal Lu scores first, along with the extra point. Sea Hawks 8 Lightning 0.

Lightning got the ball, but unfortunately unable to score. They punted to the C-Hawks who scored in 3 plays. Again, they passed to 39. They ran in the 2 point conversion which put the C-Hawks up by 16. Lightning got the ball back. TIm Krapivkin threw a beautiful pass to Jordan Leichtner. He was stopped short of the end zone. They gave the ball to Tony Garrido, who was having a great game so far, averaging over five yards a carry. He fumbled in the end zone, but J.C. Roberts was on top of the game, and recovered it in the end zone for a Lightning Touchdown. Lightning went for one and made it. Lightning are down by 9. Then on the last series of the half, on a fake punt, the C-Hawks scored one more touchdown on a deep pass to the end zone. At the half the score was C-Hawks 34 Lightning 23. The Lightning were down by 2 touchdowns. They never gave up though.

After the halftime show was over, the Lightning came out ready to play. They got the ball, and drove down the field. Then, unfortunately, we were unable to get a first down. Lightning had a great punt that went all the way down to the 10 yard line. Lightning drove the C-Hawks back, and gave them a safety. Lightning 25, C- Hawks 34. In the next series for the Lightning, they lost QB Tim Krapivkin to a concussion. The Lightning did not score again.

This was a hard fought game. No one gave up when the other team was ahead. Lightning fought hard, and played their best. We want to congratulate the coaches and the team for a great season. The world hasn't seen the last of the Joshua Springs Lightning Football!!!!
