Lightning Football News... ![]() "Dominating trio creates record eight sacks against Bethel Christian" Lightning 2004 Agape League Champions! The Lightning (6-3, 5-0), are now the 2004 Agape League champions! Playing in front of a record breaking home crowd, estimated at over 2500, the Lightning defeated the Bethel Christian Eagles 49-8 while extending its league record to a perfect 5-0. Every Lightning home game is exciting but this had to be the most exciting one ever! The festivities started at 5:45 with the Lightning Pep Band getting the crowd ready for the events to come. At exactly 6:05 Pastor Jerel Hagerman and Marine MSGT Richard Williams as well as Guinness Book record holder Jay Stokes, jumped out of a perfectly good plane on their way down to Lightning stadium. All eyes were gazing toward the sky in anticipation of their arrival as the Pep Band played "Eye of the Tiger". It took all of three minutes for them to "free fall" 10,000 feet and arrive exactly at Mid-Field to the roar of the very appreciative crowd. Next, was the introduction of the 2004 Homecoming Court. The freshman prince and princess were Scott Prutch and Kylie McCoy. The sophomore prince and princess were Danny Burkett and Danielle Martin. The junior prince and princess were Asa Huber and Anandi Hira. The senior court were princes Daniel Doran, Andy Schmid and Jerry Thorn. The princesses were Jackie Clary, Christie Pourtemour and Chandra Shumate. The 2004 Homecoming King and Queen were Jerry Thorn and Jackie Clary. The game got underway at 7:30 after the Lightning fans formed a tunnel spanning 50 yds for the Lightning team to run through. The Lightning offense was fired up and didn't waste any time scoring on their first 3 possessions and never looking back. The halftime score was 28-8 due to a powerful rushing effort from Juniors Tony Garrido (92yds, 1 TD) and Tim Krapivkin (103yds, 3 TD) as well as freshman standout Eddie "Maverick" Nixon (93 yds, 1 TD). Even the Home-Coming King senior Jerry Thorn got 75 yds and a TD when allowed 13 rushing plays on the last drive. Junior Richard Ressa had 4 catches for 31 yds and a TD as well. The Lightning Defense has been awesome over the last three games shutting down some very powerful offenses too. The Lightning defense had their best game of the year holding Bethel Christian to just 74 total yards of offense. The defense had a record 8 sacks in the game Senior Daniel Doran and Junior Jackie Roberts both had three each and Junior Kyle McClay had two. Senior Kevin Adair had 2 interceptions also. Dorin was tops in tackles with 15, plus the sacks. Defensive Leader Ray Boetger finished the regular season with 105 tackles, 10 on the night. The halftime festivities started out with the 2004 Junior Cheer Camp (approximatly 40 members) taking center field and performing their exciting routine that they had worked hard on all week long. The Lightning would score three more times in the second half while the defense refused to allow any more scoring and the Lightning went on to win 49-8. Next up, the Lightning will play Riverside Christian in round one of the playoffs at Lightning Field on Friday night at 7:00PM. The first meeting this year Riverside Christian won a squeaker over the Lightning 23-22, so a rematch should get the Lightning team fired up. The snack bar opens at 6:00 with BBQ tri-tip sandwiches, so come out early and bring the whole family.
Lightning JV Win 44-14 over Indio Charter School! The Lightning JV squad (6-1) bounced back after their disappointing 22-23 loss to Hesperia Christian to end the 2004 season with a solid effort against the Indio Charter School's varsity team. ICS had no answer for the offense of Freshman WR Tommy Higgins, Sophomore TE Nick Lyneis, Junior RB Joe Virga and Freshman QB Jesse Frazier. Freshman Jesse Schendel and Alex Carter were both outstanding on defense. Congratulations to Coach Cannavo, Coach Boetger and every JV player on a great year! Go Lightning!
