Perfect Storm III
Lightning Destroy Lone Pine for 3 rd Perfect Regular Season!
By Vince O'Brien

The Joshua Springs Lightning (9-0, 4-0) celebrated Senior Appreciation Night by striking down the Lone Pine Eagles (3-5, 2-2) 48-0 at Lightning Stadium on Saturday Night. The Lightning thundered to their 9th straight win and cemented their #2 ranking in the CIF 8 Man Division I standings.
This is the third undefeated season in the last five years for the Lightning whose five year record is now 46-9.

The Lightning remained #2 in the CIF DIV I polls behind undefeated and reigning 8 Man Div 1 Champion Faith Baptist, who have 21 straight wins over the past two years. Joshua Springs have been preparing all year for a showdown in the finals with the reigning champions.

The Lightning completely dominated the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. The offense rolled up 323 total yards against the Eagles; 183 yds were on the ground and 140 yds via the air despite losing the ball four times on fumbles. The Lightning defense had their strongest showing of the year by allowing only the Eagles only 27 total yds on offense. The Lightning run defense gave up a mere 39 yds on the ground while sacking the Eagles QB 3 times creating negative yardage in the air with minus 13 yds. The Lightning defense also created 4 turnovers with 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery and recovering the ball on a kickoff.

The Lightning struck fast and furiously building a 42 point lead in the first half and could have easily put the game away at halftime even with Coach Roberts making substitutions in order to get more players playing time. The Lightning took their first drive straight down the field on their first possession highlighted by runs of 11 and 14 yards by Tony Garrido and a 14 yd pass from Jesse Frazer to Tommy Higgins. The drive was capped off by a 1 yd plunge by Cameron Smith and a successful kick by Blake Martz. The Lightning defense than came up big by pushing the Eagles back 11 yards and forcing them to punt. On the next possession the Lightning fumbled but the defense held strong again and forced the Eagles to punt. The Lightning offense then went to the air with Jesse Frazer completing a 13 yd pass to Tommy Higgins and a 19 yard toss to Tony Garrido. The successful drive was completed with Tony Garrido taking the ball to pay dirt with a 1 yd TD run. The lightning continued to dominate the Eagles with 3 quick touchdown strikes in just 2:54. This was made possible by a kick off recovery by Blake Martz. The Lightning offense was unstoppable and Coach Roberts gave AJ Schooler and JC Roberts their first opportunities this year to carry the ball. Coach Roberts was merciful by not ending the game by halftime. Yet, before the end of the 3 rd Quarter the game ended when Jesse Frazer threw his 4 th touchdown pass of the game by completing a 14 yd TD toss to Senior Tim Krapivkin. This completed the Lightning’s final preparation for the playoffs with a dominating 48 – 0 win over the Lone Pine Eagles.

Tops in offense were Sophomore QB Jesse Frazer who was 10 of 12 for 140 yds and 4 TDs in the air while also picking up 40 yds on 8 carries and a TD run, Junior receiver Tommy Higgins hauled in 6 catches for 80 yds and 3 TD catches, Senior RB Tony Garrido carried the load on the ground with 15 carries for 56 yds and a 1 yd TD run and 1 catch for 19 yds, Sophomore RB Eddie Nixon had 10 carries for 62 yds and 2 catches for 27 yds, Junior Cameron Smith carried the ball 3 carries for 4 yds and a touchdown, and Senior TE Tim Krapivkin chipped in with a 3 yd run for a 2 pt. conversion and 1 catch for 14 yds and a TD.

The Defensive leaders were Sophomore Boomer Arnold who had 6 tackles and one for a loss plus 2 interceptions returned for 14 yds giving him the regular season lead with 5 interceptions, Sophomore Eddie Nixon led the defense in tackles with 8 and added a ½ sack, Senior JC Roberts had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery, Senior Tony Garrido had 7 tackles, one for a loss and a pass defense, Junior Aaron Newman clogged the middle with 7 tackles, Senior Kyle McClay had 3 tackles and 1.5 sacks for minus 12 yards, Junior Tommy Higgins had 6 tackles and a pass defense, Senior Tim Krapivkin had 4 tackles from the safety position, and Sophomore Vince Ellis dominated the middle with a tackle and three forced fumbles.

The Lightning are taking their undefeated record to the playoffs with the first round contest at home against Upland Christian at Lightning Stadium this coming Friday, November 11, at 7:00PM. Please come out and cheer on The Lightning squad as they began the playoffs and the march to the Championship Game.
