Lightning JV Defeats Upland Christian 48-26!
The Lightning JV football team (7-0), traveled to Upland, CA to take on the Upland Christian Eagles Monday afternoon. The Eagles don't actually have a JV team so the Lightning JV ended up playing the Upland Varsity team minus six of their upper classmen. It didn't take long to see that the Lightning defense was going to dominate this game. The Lightning held the Eagles to just 4 first downs and 141 total yd's of offense while the Lightning offense rolled up 422 total yards, 322 yd's on the ground and 100 yd's through the air.
The Lightning struck first when Freshman Cole Roberts made a 1 yd plunge into the end zone, at the 7:15 mark of the 1st quarter, making the score 6-0. The 2-pt conversion failed. Then at the 1:46 mark Sophomore QB Derek Brogdon hit Freshman David Manley through the air on a 9 yard TD catch making the score 12-0. The 2-pt conversion failed again. The Eagles offense had been stopped up to the .26 mark in the first quarter when the Eagles scored on a 43 yd TD run from scrimmage making the score 12-6.
The 2nd Quarter was a defensive battle on both sides until the Lightning scored with .40 left in the first half on another 1 yd run by Roberts to make the score 18-6.
The Lightning got surprised when the opening kick off in the 2nd half was ran back for a TD by the Eagles making the score 18-12. The Lightning answered by marching down the field and scoring on a 2 yd run by sophomore Jon Krapivkin making the score 26-12 after the 2-pt conversion was made by sophomore Alex Carter. The Eagles then answered with a 37 yard TD pass making the score 26-18.
The Lightning struck again at the 4:31 mark of the fourth quarter when Roberts ran a 2 yd TD sweep making the score 34-18, Roberts also made the 2-pt conversion. The Lightning kicked the ball off only to have the Eagles run it back for another TD making the score 34-26 after a successful 2-pt conversion. The Lightning got the ball and scored on a 33 yard pass play to Carter from Brogdon making the score 40-26. The Lightning scored the final TD on a 28 yd run by Carter making the score 48-26. Roberts got the 2-pt conversion.
Brogdon was 5 of 9 for 100 yd's, 2 TD's and an interception as well as 9 carries for 64 yd's, Roberts had 26 carries for 100 yd's and 3 TD's, Freshman Chris Rogers had 13 carries for 78 yd's, Carter had 10 carries for 70yds and a TD as well as 2 catches for 56 yd's and a TD, Krapivkin had 3 carries for 10yds and a TD. Freshman Denzell Dobbins had 2 catches for 35 yd's and Manley had 1 catch for 9 yd's and a TD.
Tops in Defense were Carter who had 11 tackles, 2 for a loss and a pass defense, Sophomore Josh Buchanan had 5 tackles, 1 sack and a caused fumble. Dobbins had 4 tackles, 1 sack and a fumble recovery, Krapivkin had 4 tackles and 2 pass defenses, Freshman Vince Ames had 4 tackles, 1 for a loss and a 1/2 sack, Manley had 3 tackles, 1 for a loss, 1/2 sack and a fumble recovery, Rogers had 3 tackles.
