Lightning Football News...
Lightning Storm too Much for Desert Chapel!
It was the opening night of the 2006-2007 season, the weather was beautiful, the 900+ crowd was ready for football, and then it happened, the Lightning Storm hit! It took everyone by surprise. It was predicted that the 2006 varsity team would be pretty good but no one expected the dominating performance that the Lightning would have against Desert Chapel of Palm Springs. After all, the Desert Chapel Eagles have won the CIF 8-Man division 2 championship the last two years in a row. The Eagles were thought to be the team to beat in Division 2 again this year. The Lightning, on the other hand, have been to the CIF 8-man Div 1 Championship 3 out of the last 5 years, but have yet to be crowned champions. On Saturday night, the Lightning sent a message to Desert Chapel and the rest of the 8-man football division by crushing the Eagles 74-28 and the game was stopped at the 4:05 mark of the last quarter. It was the most dominating showing of Lightning offense in the history of the school.
The Lightning offense created 535 total yds of offense, 470 rushing and 65 through the air. The offense also produced 11 TD's and 8 extra points. Three new school records were set in the game. The team set a new record of "the most points ever scored in a game" with 74 pts, Junior RB Eddie Nixon broke two of Kollin Woodbury's individual records of most rushing yards in a game - 262 yds and 5TD's in a game. The new record set by Nixon is 272 yds on 21 carries and 6 TD's. Most people thought Woodbury's records would never be broken, but Nixon now has two of them. Only one more to go and that is the single season rushing record of 2,314 yards. Nixon is well on his way towards that record.
Nixon wasn't the only one getting in on the scoring action. Junior QB Jesse Frazer had 44 yds rushing, 1 TD and was 3 of 6 for 65 yds and 2 TD's through the air. Senior TE Tommy Higgins had 58 yds receiving and two TD's. Sophomore RB Cole Roberts also had 47 yds rushing and two TD's to add to his birthday celebration. Senior FB Camron Smith had 71 yds rushing on 12 carries. Varsity kicker Junior Derek Brogdon was 8 of 9 on PAT's for 8 pts.
The Defense wasn't too bad either creating 5.5 sacks on a very quick and shifty Eagle QB who managed to break loose from time to time on the Lightning defense. Nixon had a great night on both sides of the ball also creating 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Junior "Boomer" Arnold had 13 tackles, Junior Jon Krapivkin had 8 tackles, Brogdon had 6 tackles and 1 sack and Senior Aaron Newman had 6 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Senior Jon Crase had 3 tackles and a sack and Sophomore Vince Ames also had a sack. Higgins also got his first pick of the year and Senior Mike Barta had a fumble recovery.
Next up for the Lightning is a home game Friday, Sept. 15th, at Lightning stadium against the Calvary Chapel Moreno Valley Lions. The game will start at 7:00PM. The Lions are 0-1 on the season but it should still be a good game.
