Lightning 3-Peat as Agape League Champions!
The Joshua Springs Lightning (9-0,5-0) are the Agape League Champions for the third year in a row and also completed their 2nd consecutive perfect storm, 9-0, season. This was the fourth perfect 9-0 season in the school's history. The previous three perfect seasons all lead to a trip to the CIF Divisional Finals in 2001, 2002, and 2005. The Lightning have their eyes set on another trip to the finals this year.
Coach Roberts now in his 8th year as head coach is 69-19 (78.4% wins) overall, has lead the team to the playoffs every year that he has been coach. During the 2006 regular season the Lightning won six of nine games by the 45-pt mercy rule, four of those were won by halftime. The Lightning averaged 54 pts a game on offense and only allowed 12.5 pts per game on defense.
The last regular season game of the year was against the Excelsior Education Center Eagles from Victorville, CA. The Eagles came into the game 3-5 and played very hard during the first quarter. The Eagles held the Lightning offense on the their first possession to only 5 plays and the Lightning turned the ball over on downs. This fired up the Eagles offense who had a long pass completion down to the Lightning 5 yd line. The Lightning defense held and forced a field-goal attempt which the Eagles made good and the Lightning were actually behind 0-3 in the first quarter.
The Lightning came right back and scored on the next possession and the score was 7-3 and that was the end of the first quarter of play. What hopes the Eagles had of keeping it a close game were quickly erased in the 2nd quarter when the Lightning rolled up 46 unanswered points and won the game at the half with a score of 53-3.
Lightning Junior QB Jesse Fraser was 6 of 7 for 71 yds and a TD while also rushing for 47 yds on 5 carries and 2 TD's. Junior RB Eddie Nixon rushed for 85 yds on 10 carries , 2 TD's and two 2-pt conversions, Senior FB Camron Smith had 6 carries for 29 yds, a TD and a 2-pt conversion, Sophomore RB Cole Roberts had 4 carries for 20 yds and a TD and Sophomore RB Chris Rogers had 12 yds on 3 carries. Receiving the ball Junior TE Boomer Arnold had 3 catches for 27 yds, a TD and a 2-pt conversion, Junior TE Derek Brogdon had 27 yds on 2 catches, and Junior TE Jeff Brady had 1 catch for 17 yds.
On defense Nixon lead the pack with 7 tackles and .5 sacks, Arnold had 4 tackles one for a loss, Junior Jon Crase had 3 tackles, one for a loss and a recovered fumble, Brogdon had 3 tackles, Senior Aaron Newman had 2 tackles, .5 sacks, one caused fumble and a blocked punt, Smith had 1 tackle, 1.5 sacks and recovered 2 fumbles, and Roberts had 1 tackle and 1 sack.
Next up for the Lightning is the first game of the playoffs against the Whitewater Saints at Lightning Stadium on Friday, Nov. 10th at 7:00PM. The Saints are 5-2 on the year and finished third in the Warrior league. The Saints and Lightning have only met one time before and that was in 2005; the Lightning won 47-0. The Saints would love to upset the #1 ranked Lightning, so come out early to the game. You can expect a show of severe Lightning.
