2006 Football Awards

The Joshua Springs Lightning football program had its 2006 Football Awards program Thursday night, December 20 at the Joshua Springs Campus. The evening was full of excitement as the coaches, parents and players that were on hand got to watch the year in review on the big screen. The highlights included both the JV team who went 5-2 this year and the varsity team that finished 11-1, losing only in the CIF 8-Man Division I, Semi-final game. Each player was featured in the video showing their oustanding abilities.

It was another great year for Coach Roberts who is now 71-20 in eight years as the Lightning Head Coach. The only accomplishment that has managed to alude Coach Roberts is a CIF Championship Title. Even though he has been in the championship game three times and to the semi-finals this year, he admitted that "There is more to Coaching this team than winning a championship. I take pride in the seeing the type of players our program produces and the quality of men they become. I am honored to have had a small part in the development of these young men."

The Lightning had many things to be proud of this year such as winning the Agape League Championship for the third year in a row and making its 9th straight playoff appearance. Joshua Springs has only had a football program for 11 years. The Lightning completed thier 4th undefeated season of 9-0 and 2nd back-to-back 9-0 regular seasons.

Receving awards on the JV team were 2006 MVP - Chris Rogers, 2006 Offensive Player of the Year - Denzell Dobbins, 2006 Defensive Player of the Year - Vincent Ames and 2006 Lineman of the Year - Chris Crase.

The 2006 Varsity Awards were Highlighted by the 2006 MVP going to Eddie Nixon who rushed for 1815 yds on 228 carries and had 27 rushing TDs, he also had 15 catches for 191 yds and 3 TDs, overall Nixon scored 33 TDs, 32 Conversion points for a total of 230 pts on the year. Nixon also broke the career rushing record held by Tony Garrido of 2837 yds. Nixon's new record is 3,523 career rushing yards and he still has one more year to go. Nixon also received an ALL CIF award, Agape Defensive MVP Award and the Lightning Defensive Player of the year Award and the IronMan Award. Nixon lead the team in defense with 98 tackles, 6 sacks and 4 Iterceptions, 3 for TDs.

Jesse Frazer also had a good night being recognized as the Agape League Offensive MVP, ALL CIF award and the Lightning Offensive Player of the year. Jon Crase became only the fourth lineman in Lightning history to received an ALL CIF award, JC Roberts, Robert (Tiny) Masanani and Tom Robinson were the other three, and Crase also received an All Agape Award and the 2006 Coaches Award. Camron Smith received the 2006 Most Improved Player award and an All Agape award.

Tommy Higgins was on his way to his best year when he was injured and had to sit out the last 5 games of the year, still, Higgins was recognized with an All Agape award and he also broke the record this year for Career Receptions; he had 58 receptions for 1053 total yds in the last 2 years.

Derek Brogdon also received an All Agape award, he finished 2nd on the team in tackles with 72, Jon Krapivkin received an all Agape award for his efforts on defense, Boomer Arnold receved an all Agape Award for finishing third place on the team with 63 tackles and Aaron Newman also received an All Agape Award for his efforts at Nose Guard this year.
