Lightning Strike the Tornados 56-30!

After riding on a bus for a little over three hours, the Lightning football team finally arrived in Trona, CA., home of the Trona Tornados. The Tornados currently ranked #4 in CIF 8-man Div 2. were undefeated at 2-0 and looking to keep it that way.

The game started out pretty even with the spirited Tornados holding the Lightning offense to just 6 pts. But the 2nd quarter was all Lightning as they scored 36 pts while only allowing 6 more points from the Tornados. The score at the half was 42-12. Coach Roberts decided to get some of the 2nd string into the game and the Lightning picked up another 6pts in the third quarter. The Tornados did the same and the score after three was 48-18.

The Tornados actually outscored the Lightning in the 4th quarter picking up 12 pts to the Lightning's 8. So the final was Lightning 56, Tornados 30. The Highlight of the game for the Tornados was a kickoff return for a TD, but that was about it for the Tornados and the Lightning Defense made sure the game was secured.

The Lightning offense finished with 448 total yds, 283 on the ground and 165 in the air. The Lightning defense held the Tornados to 196 total yards.

Top in offense for the game was Junior RB Eddie Nixon with 198 yds on 30 carries and 4 TD's, Senior Camron Smith had 39 yds on 14 carries and 1 TD and Lightning Junior QB Jesse Frazer had 42 yds on 6 carries. Frazer was 12 of 19 for 165 yds and 4 TD's through the air. Senior TE Tommy Higgins had 7 catches for 115 yds, 3 TD's and a 2pt conversion, Nixon had 3 catches for 33 yds and a TD as well as 2- 2pt conversions. Junior TE Derek Brogdon had 1 catch for 15 yds.

On Defense Nixon led the pack with 10 tackles, Frazer had 9 tackles, Junior Jon Krapivkin had 9 tackles, Senior Boomer Arnold had 8 tackles and a fumble recovery, Senior Aaron Newman had 7 tackles and senior AJ Schooler had 5 tackles. Sophomore Cole Roberts had a caused fumble.

Next up for the Lightning is a home game against the #5 ranked Rolling Hills Prep Huskies on Friday at 7:00PM. The Huskies are 4-0 and have only allowed 6 pts in 4 games. This will be the toughest match up so far this season for the Lightning. A severe Lightning storm is forecast for this Friday so were your purple and gold to this one.
