Lightning Defeat Whitewater 60-16!

The Joshua Springs Lightning (10-0,5-0) opened the 2006 CIF 8-Man Div I playoffs with a solid win over the Whitewater Saints (5-3) Friday night at Lightning Stadium. The Saints were the 3rd place finishers in the Warrior League which qualified them to go against the #1 ranked Lightning in the opening round. The first meeting between the two teams was last season when Whitewater first entered the 8-Man Division I; the Lightning won 47-0.

The Saints were a quick team and had a decent passing game which was a good test for the Lightning. The Lightning defense prevailed and the Lightning offense just kept rolling along; the Lightning lead 45-8 at halftime. The game was technically over when the Lightning went ahead 60-8 in the third quarter, by way of the 45-pt mercy rule, but the coaches agreed to allow Whitewater one more possession, which the saint made good scoring another TD. The final score was 60-16.

Lightning Junior QB Jesse Fraser was 8 of 14 for 166 yds and a TD, Junior RB Eddie Nixon rushed for 134 yds on 11 carries , 3 TD's and two 2-pt conversions, Senior FB Camron Smith had 5 carries for 36 yds and 4 TD's (his Career best). Receiving the ball Junior Jon Krapivkin had 2 catches for 95 yds and a TD, Junior TE Derek Brogdon had 41 yds on 2 catches, Junior TE Boomer Arnold had 2 catches for 17 yds, Nixon had one catch for 10 yds and Junior TE Jeff Brady had 1 catch for 3 yds and a 2pt converson.

On defense Nixon lead the pack with 8 tackles and 1 sack for a 25 yd loss, Brogdon had 6 tackles, 2 pass defenses and a caused fumble, Senior Aaron Newman had 5 tackles, Smith had 5 tackles, a QB hurrie and a sack, Frazer had 4 tackles, a caused fumble and a half sack, Senior Jon Crase had 4 tackles, one for a loss, and Junior Alex Carter had 4 tackles, Junior Jon Krapivkin had 2 tackles and an Interception, and Senior Vince Ellis had a fumble recovery.

Next up for the Lightning is the 2nd round of the playoffs and a game against the Avalon Lancers from Catalina. The game will be played at Lightning Stadium on Friday, Nov. 17th at 7:00PM. The Lancers are 6-4 and the Express League Champions. The Lightning and Lancers have only met one time before and that was in 2002 during the semi-finals of the playoffs; the Lightning won 25-6 at Catalina knocking the Lancer our of the playoffs. The Lightning went on to play Riverside Christain in the Campionship The Lancers would love to upset the #1 ranked Lightning, so come out early to the game. This will be a hard-hitting game and will go all four quarters.
