Lightning Tie RHP 12-12 in Defensive Battle!
(San Pedro, CA) It was a beautiful day for football and it was a classic match up of #1 vs #2. The Lightning had made the 2-hour road trip to Rolling Hills Prep to prove who was going to be #1. In the first quarter it looked like it would be business as usual for the Lightning as they scored twice moving ahead 12-0. But the Lions had something else in mind as they manage to do something that hasn't been done in 38 games; hold the Lightning to no points for 3 quarters. The Lightning came into the game averaging 53.3 points per game but on this day sputtered for the 3 final quarters. Lightning has also never been tied in the school's 12-yr football history.
The Lightning managed 17 first downs in the game and 350 yds of offense but created 3 costly turnovers deep in the Lions side of the field that slowed the momentum and almost lost the game for the Lightning. The Lightning had 2 interceptions and fumbled the ball from center on the Lions 15 yd line. If it were not for a strong showing of the Lightning defense the game would have been lost.
But the Lightning defense came to play and stopped two separate drives in the red zone as well as stopped the final extra point that could have won the game for the Lions with 3 seconds left in the game. The kick went wide left and the Lightning fans took a big sigh as the Lightning remained undefeated and still #1 in the polls.
The only two scores in the game were made by Senior QB Jesse Frazer and Senior RB Eddie "nitro" Nixon who still managed to bang out 28 carries and 142 yds on the ground in this low scoring affair. Nixon's TD however, was through the air and one of his 2 catches for 32yds.
On offense Frazer was 9 of 19 for 117 yds and 2 interceptions, he also carried the ball 10 times for 63 yds and a TD. Senior Alex Carter had 11 carries for 28 yds and 1 catch for 23 yds, Senior Boomer Arnold had 3 catches for 40 yds, Senior Derek Brogdon had 2 catches for 16 yds and Senior Jon Krapivkin had 1 catch for 6 yds.
Top defenders were Carter who had 13 tackles, Brogdon had 12 tackles and recovered a fumble, Krapivkin had 11 tackles and a nice pick to save a TD, Arnold had 10 tackles, Nixon had 8 tackles, Frazer had 6 tackle sand Junior Cole Roberts had 4 tackles and a sack. Senior Jeff "B-Rad" Brady also had a great day rushing the QB with several hurries to his credit as well as 6 tackles.
Next up for the Lightning is a trip to Victor Valley, CA. to open the Agape League season against the Excelsior Education Center Eagles at Victor Valley Christian's field. The game will be on Saturday, October 6th, at 7:00PM. For directions or more information call the school office at 760-365-3599.
