# 3 Ranked Avalon Falls to the Lightning 47-29!

Once it was determined where the game was actually going to be played, the CIF 8-Man Div I - #1 Ranked Lightning (3-0) took on the #3 ranked Avalon Lancers (3-1) at Millikan High school in Long Beach, CA. The last time these two teams met was in the 2006 playoffs where the Lightning dominated the Lancers and won 44-7. The Lightning lead the series 3-0. This game was up in the air for a while as bad weather caused the Lancer's field on Catalina Island to be closed down by the city; forcing the game to be played elsewhere.

For the 100 or so Lightning fans that made the trip to Long Beach it was worth the drive for the Lancer's gave the Lightning a good game and both teams did well. In the end, it was the Lightning defense who was the difference causing 2 interceptions and 3 fumbles which kept the Lancer's in the whole most of the game and no chance to catch up.

The Lancer's were the first team to score as they marched down the field on the opening drive while the Lightning defense scrambled to adjust to a pretty good Lancer offense, making the score 0-7, Lancers. The Lightning got the ball and then fumbled it right back to the Lancers. On the very next play senior Alex Carter got an interception getting the ball back for the Lightning. The Lightning then marched down the field finishing the score with a 25yd TD pass from senior QB Jesse Frazer to senior TE Derek Brogdon for the score. After a failed extra point it was 6-7, Lancers.

The Lancers fumbled on their next possession and the Lightning took advantage again scoring quickly on a 6 yd plunge into the end zone by Carter. A 2pt conversion and it was 14-7, Lightning.

In the 2nd quarter the Lancers drove all the way down to the 5-yd line only to fumble the ball back to the Lightning. The Lightning drove all the way for a score making it 22-7. You could see the momentum switching over to the Lightning bench. Then the Lancers got a receiver behind the Lightning secondary and got a quick score on a 41 yd pass play and shorten the gap to 22-13. The Lightning would score one more time when senior Jon Krapivkin got in on a 1yd plunge to make it 28-13 at the half. At this point there was still the feeling that anything could happen in the game.

The third quarter was all Lightning as they scored three more times on scores by senior RB Eddie Nixon and junior FB Cole Roberts making the score 47-13. At this point the bench started to get some playing time and the Lancers took advantage of it scoring on a long drive making it 47-21, Lightning. The the Lightning got flagged for some holding calls giving the Lancers great field position and with 4:34 left in the game they pulled within 18 points making the score 47-29. The Lightning controlled the rest of the game and it ended 47-29.

Tops on offense were Frazer who was 9 of 17 for 156 yds, 3 TDs and 1 Int. Frazer also rushed 15 times for 45 yds. Nixon rushed 15 times for 111 yds, 1 TD and a 2 pt conversion. Nixon also had 2 catches for 65 yds and 1 TD. Roberts had 7 carries for 42 yds and a TD. Carter had 9 carries for 40 yds and 1 TD as well as 1 catch for 2 yds. Brogdon had 3 catches for 48 yds and 2 TD's, senior Boomer Arnold had 2 catches for 19 yds. Krapivkin had 2 carries for 5 yds and 1 TD as well as 1 catch for 26 yds. Junior Chris Rogers had 3 carries for 4 yds.

On Defense the top defenders were Arnold who had 15 tackles. Brogdon had 10 tackles, Frazer had 7 tackles, Carter had 7 tackles with .5 sacks and 1 interception, senior Jeff Brady had 6 tackles and .5 sacks, Krapivkin had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery, Nixon had 4 tackles and 1 interception, junior Denzell Dobbins had 2 tackles and a fumble recovery and Vincent Ames had 2 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Next up for the Lightning is a trip to San Pedro, CA. to take on the #2 ranked Rolling Hills Prep Huskies at 1:00PM on Saturday, September 29th. The last time the two teams met the Lightning won 33-19. This should be a great game. For directions to the game call the school office at 365-3599 or Click Here.
