First Lightning Storm of the Season!

by Chris Crase

As the sun went down last Friday night, lightning struck...hard. The Joshua Springs Lightning football team won their first game 47-0 against the New Hope Center Lions. The Lions traveled all the way from south Los Angeles for this game. Last year, New Hope Center finished 3rd in the CIF 8 man division II with a record of 7-3.

The Lightning football team crushed Hope Center with their unstoppable offense and their hard hitting defense. Joshua Spring’s offense had a total of 276 yds while the Lions only had 85 yards. One reason for this offense is the talent and discipline of the Lightning running backs and quarter back; Eddie Nixon carried the ball for 3 carries, 2 touchdowns, and a total of 86 yards next was QB Jessie Frazer who ran for 32 yards with one touchdown, also Chris Rogers carried 5 times for 59 yards. For the passing yards of this game, Jessie Frazer was 2 for 2 for 56 yards and 2 touchdowns. Derrick Brogden got both of them. On special teams Derrick Brogden kicked 5 of 7 kickoffs for touchbacks. He also kicked 4/5 of the extra points.

For the hard hitting defense a few players stood out among the rest: Alex Carter had 9 tackles and 1 sack, Derrick Brogden had 7 tackles with a ½ sack, and Boomer Arnold had 7 tackles. These players only had about ½ of a game to play though. The game ended 15 seconds into the third quarter on the first play. The Joshua Springs Lightning won the game by the 45 point mercy rule. The Joshua Springs Lightning have won League championships for 3 straight years, the Lightning hope to make this their 4th in a row. Last year the Lightning record was 11-1 where they were undefeated until the semi playoffs. This season seems to be off to a great start for the lightning.

New Hope Center’s next game will be at Rolling Hills Prep on Saturday September 15 at 1:00. The Joshua Spring Lightning will be playing Santa Clarita at home on Saturday September 15 at 7:00 pm. The Joshua Springs Lightning have never beat Santa Clarita in football so this should be a good game for both teams.
