Severe Lightning Torch the Cardinals 66-27 !

It was only the 3rd time the Lightning and the Santa Clarita Cardinals have played in football over the last 11 years and the first two times the Cardinals won. The first time, it was a punt ran back with less than a minute in the game for a TD that decided the game 27-26 in favor of the Cardinals. The last time in 2000, it was a 38-20 defeat and it was a bad enough memory that Coach Roberts had the kids fired up for this game all week.

The game started out with the #6 ranked Cardinals drawing first blood going up 7-0 and letting the 850 Lightning fans on hand know that this was going to be a game. The #1 ranked Lightning immediately answered and made the score 7-7. The Lightning would score two more times in the first quarter going up 20-7.

The 2nd quarter was a Cardinal quarter as they outscored the Lightning 14 to 8 drawing closer to the Lightning making it a 28-21 game at the half. The crowd was actually happy to see the Cardinals make a game of it. Over the last few years the Lightning have run through their season 9-0 and would not play any really tough opponents until the playoffs; this year Coach Roberts booked a strong preseason to help prepare the Lightning for a better finish this year.

A severe Lightning defensive and offensive storm hit in the 2nd half as the Lightning would roll off 38 points to the Cardinals 6, almost ending the game in another 45 point mercy rule. The Cardinals manage to survive that embarrassment, but they looked really tired. The Lightning team have looked in great physical shape compared to the other teams they have played; especially in the 4th quarter.

On offense, senior Jesse Frazer was 4 of 9 for 44 yds, 2 TDs and an Interception. Frazer also rushed 6 times for 117 yds and 4 TD's. Senior Eddie "Nitro" Nixon also rushed 22 times for 166 yds and 3 TD's. Nixon was banged up in the 4th quarter and was scheduled to see the doctor this week. Nixon is hoping to be back in the lineup soon. Senior Alex Carter rushed 12 times for 66 yds and had 2 catches for 21 yds and a TD. Senior Boomer Arnold also had 2 catches for 23 yds and a TD. Junior Cole Roberts had 1 carry for 8 yds. Receiver and kicker senior Derek Brogdon was ill and saw limited play but still managed to kick 4 of 5 extra points. Brogdon also managed to kick off 9 times with 7 touchbacks. Nixon had 3 punt returns for 52 yds and 1 kick off return for 40 yds. The Lightning did have 3 mistakes on offense, 2 fumbles and a pick.

On defense, the Lightning were tenacious creating 2 sacks and 8 tackles for a loss. The Lightning also forced 3 fumbles, recovering 1 and got 1 interception with an 18 yds return. Arnold lead all defenders with 12 tackles, 2 for a loss, Brogdon had 11 tackles and a pass defense, Carter had 11 tackles, .5 sack and a QB hurry, Nixon had 11 tackles, 2 for a loss and a QB hurry, senior Jon Krapivkin had 9 tackles, 1 for a loss, Frazer had 8 tackles and an interception return for 18 yds, Roberts had 5 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2 QB hurries.

Next up for the Lightning is a trip to Catalina Island to take on the #3 ranked Avalon Lancers at 1:00PM on Saturday September 22. The last time the two teams met the Lightning won 25-6 on their way to the 2002 CIF Championship game. This should be a great game. Over 200 fans will be traveling to Catalina for this one, join us if you can.
