Lightning Lose Opener 6-46!
The Lightning opened the 2008 season facing probably their hardest match of the season in a rematch of the 2007 CIF Championship game against Faith Baptist of Los Angeles. The Contenders were out for revenge of last year's loss and the Lightning were not quite ready for the Contenders after losing 11 starters from their 2007 championship team.
Lightning stadium was packed with the excitement of a great game, but the only good thing about this game for the Lightning; was the running of senior RB Cole Roberts. Roberts rushed 26 times for 163 yds and one touchdown. Sounds pretty impressive, but when you compare that to the 8 lost fumbles, four by the quarterback, and four by the runnings backs. The Lightning just could not get out of L-Gear (losing gear). It took the Lightning 2 1/2 quarters to get close enough to the goal for Roberts to punch one in and save the team an opening night goose-egg for the home crowd. This was not a good showing for the 2008 Lightning squad. It doesn't help when your testing a new QB with new everything against a powerhouse program like Faith Baptist.
So, we took our whoopin and now we have to prepare for the Santa Clarita Cardinals next week on the road at their house. The Cardinals are currently ranked #2 in CIF standings, so it will not be an easier game. The Lightning put a good beating on the Cardinals last year and I am sure they are ready for a little payback.
Tops in defense were Roberts with 14 tackles and Tyler Carlisle with 10.
