Lightning Hold On to defeat the Conquerors 42-30!

The Lightning football team played one the best games in recent history Friday night against a very determined Desert Christian team that just wouldn't give up. If not for the tough conditioning of the Lightning team this game could have went the other way. The Lightning held on in the fourth quarter a finally got enough separation to win the game 42-30. But the game was closer than the score.

The Lightning stuck first through the air as QB Zack Ontiveros would have his best game of the year passing for 257 yds and 3 TDs, the first one going to Josh Leichtner for 29 yds. Then an even better score hitting Erik McClay on a long 66 yd pass play for another TD. Both conversions were good and the Lightning led 16-0 in the First quarter.

Then in the 2nd quarter the Conquerors hit two back to back scores through the air themselves making it 16-14, Lightning. Ontiveros hit Leichtner one more time for a 20 yd TD reception making the score 22-14, Lightning. Then with just 28 seconds left in the half the Conquerors had a 19 yd reception for a TD and the Conversion was good, tying the score 22-22 at the half. Wow, that was a half of football.

The third quarter was all defense and neither team could get to pay dirt then with 11:48 to go in the 4th quarter Tyler Carlisle broke through to the end zone on a 2 yd play. The conversion was good and the score was 30-22. The Conquerors came right back on a 29 yd pass play for a TD, the conversion was good and it is a 30-30 ball game.

Carlisle then took over the game pushing hard on every play and was able to score again on a 2yd run. The Lightning conditioning now paid off as the Lightning dug in deep and stopped the Conquerors on downs getting the ball back. Carlisle knew we need more separation on the score to put the game away and he worked his magic down the field finally scoring again putting the Lightning up 42-30. The Conquerors started marching down the field but the Lightning defense held and the Conquerors ran out of time. This was an exciting game and one not soon to be forgotten.

Carlisle would finish the game with 32 hard carries for only 117 yds and three TDs, Chris Barnes had 12 carries for 38 yds and Levi Garrido had 1 carry for 8 yds. Leichtner would end the night with 6 catches for 147 yds and 2 TDs, his best performance of the year, Chris Barnes would also have 2 catches for 34 yds and Carlisle had 2 catches for 10 yds.

The defense was awesome in this game coming though when they were really needed. The defense was led by Erik McClay who had 8 tackles, 1 for a loss and 1 Interception, Greg Lindblom had 7 tackles and 1 fumble recovery, Josh Leichtner had 6 tackles, 1 sack, a fumble recovery and 1 interception, Steve Henderson had 4 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 caused fumble, Carlisle had 4 tackles, 2 sacks and a caused fumble, Jake Ontiveros had 3 tackles and 1 sack, Chris Barnes had 1 tackles and a sack.

The Lightning will now play Hope Centre in the CIF 8-Man Division II championship next Friday at Lightning field. This is their 3rd trip in a row to the CIF finals.
