Lightning Outrun the C-Hawks 42-28!
The Lightning football team headed to hostle territory on Friday night for the 2nd round of the 2009 CIF playoffs to take on the Cal Lutheran C-Hawks at Wildomar, CA. The last time these two teams met was in the 2003 playoffs in this same stadium where the C-Hawks sent the Lightning home early defeating them 40-20. The Lightning had other plans for this trip but the C-Hawks were coming into this came 7-3 having won their last two games in a row. The Lightning were also 7-3 having won their last 6 games in a row.
The Lightning stuck first with Tyler Carlisle scoring two TDs back to back putting the Lightning up by 14 -0. Then in the next series Greg Lindblom return a punt 61 yds for a TD putting the Lightning up 20-0. The only score the C-Hawks made in the first quarter was on a kick-off return for a TD making the score 20-6, Lightning.
In the 2nd Quarter, the C-Hawks got their offense going outscoring the Lightning 16-8 and at the half it was 36-22, Lightning.
The 2nd half was a defensive battle with neither team wanting to give up much. both teams scored 6 pts each in the 3rd quarter and then nothing in the 4th quarter so the Lightning held on to win 42-28, in a game that was much closer. The C-Hawks just couldn't dig there way out of the 1st quarter deficit and the Lightning finished it off for the win.
QB Zack Ontiveros was just 3 of 9 for 46 yds and 1 interception. So, the C-Hawks defense did a good job on the Lightning's passing game, but could not control the running game. Carlisle had his 7th straight 100 yd game getting 172 yds on 34 carries, and 4 TDs. Chris Barnes also had 12 carries for 27 yds and a TD. Carlisle also had 2 catches for 37 yds and
Erik McClay had one catch for 9 yds.
On defense, Josh Leichtner led the team with 14 tackles, 1 for a loss, Carlisle had 11 tackles, 1 for a loss, 1.5 sacks and 1 caused fumble, Steven Henderson had 9 tackles, 12 for a loss, 2 sacks and 1 pass defense, McClay had 8 tackles, 1 for a loss and 2 interceptions, Ontiveros had 8 tackles and 2 pass defenses, Greg Lindblom had 6 tackles and 1 for a loss and Michael Samu had 2 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The Lightning will now face Desert Christian in the semi-finals this coming Friday night at Desert Christian (CSOD) at 7:00PM.
