Lightning Volleyball News...Lady Lightning Dominate in 2005 Opener!Story By Eric Scholar The Lady Lightning (1-0) opened their 2005 season Friday Night at the Thunderdome against the Excelsior Education Center Eagles(0-1). This was the first meeting ever between the two teams. The Thunderdome was rocking as about 150 Lightning fans were waiting to see this years Varsity Squad in action. "This is an exciting team to watch" said new Assistant Coach Bekka Patton, "We have the potential to go deep into the playoffs". The Lightning fans were not disappointed as the Lady Lightning dominated all three games winning 25-10, 25-12 and 25-12. In the first game, Senior Katy Ortiz got the Lightning going scoring 11 points in a row in one set of serving. Coach John Fox decided to put in his relief squad to make the game a little more competitive. The second team also played all of the second game beating the Lady Eagles 25 to 12. The starters game back in for the third game and won very quickly 25-12. The Lady Lightnings' team play was great but their serving was awesome putting together 52 aces out of 89 total serves as well as 15 kills. The team defense was great too with a total of 59 blocks. In individual play, Ortiz led the team with 10 aces, 7 blocks and 3 kills, Junior Christian Stratton also had 10 aces, Senior Amanda Nelson had 13 blocks, 4 kills and 2 aces, Junior Laura Adair had 9 blocks and 2 kills, Senior Anandi Hira had 8 aces, Senior Ashley Vrooman had 4 digs and 3 aces, and Senior Melissa Ward led the team in assists with 10. The members of the Varsity team this year are: Seniors; Katrina Abel, Danielle Buckner, Anandi Hira, Amanda Nelson, Katie Ortiz, Ashley Vrooman, Melissa Ward, Juniors; Laura Adair, Kristin Manley, Carissa Rarrick, Allison Reed, Christina Stratton, Sophomore; Kylie McKoy. Next up for the Lightning is an away game with Lucerne Valley on Thursday afternoon at 5:00PM in Lucerne Valley and then back home on Friday to play the Riverside Cougars at 6:00pm at the Thunderdome.
