Lady Lightning Win in Season Opener

The 2006 Varsity Volleyball season got underway Thursday night at the Thunderdome when the Lady Lightning took on the Desert Chapel Lady Eagles from Palm Springs. A great crowd was on hand to see the debut of the 2006 team and the return of Head Coach Dennis Newcomb. Newcomb, the most successful volleyball coach the Lightning has ever had, returned to Joshua Springs after a two year period where is was the Head Coach of the Bloomington Christian Volleyball team.

The Lady Lightning came out strong with Senior Allison Reed scoring three aces in a row and setting the pace for the game. The strength of the Lady Lightning's team right now is their serving. Everyone of the starters can serve well and did so keeping the pressure on the Lady Eagles. The net play needs a little work but with Senior Alyse Young developing as a legitimate blocker, we should see good things in the future. Senior Carrisa Rarick excited the crowd as she entered the game and served a perfect ace to win the first game.

The 2005 varsity team graduated 8 seniors which left concerns with a lot of the Lightning fans, but those concerns left soon as the Lady Lightning gave the fans a sample of what they can expect this year. The Lady Lightning won all three games 25-11, 25-23 and 25-18.

The Lady Lightning JV team also played and looked good at times but lost both of their games 15-25 and 18-25. They have a lot of talent and should get better with each game.

Next up for the Lady Lightning is an away game at Riverside Christian on Tuesday, September 12 at Riverside. The JV Team will play at 5:00PM and the Varsity team at 6:00PM. Then they will host Lucerne Valley on Thursday, Sept. 14th at the Thuderdome. The JV games is at 4:30PM and the Varsity at 5:30PM.
